The Forest Friend
Flora, a seven-year-old with a heart full of sunshine, skipped through the whispering forest. Sunlight dappled through the tall green trees, making patterns on the soft, mossy ground. She loved playing here, listening to the birds sing their happy songs.
Nearby, her friend Maya, also seven, was pretending to be a speedy forest creature. Maya giggled as she wove between the tree trunks, her red shoes kicking up tiny puffs of dust. Flora smiled, enjoying the peaceful morning with her friend.
Suddenly, Maya decided to run even faster, pretending to be a super-quick squirrel. She zoomed around a big oak tree, not quite watching where her feet were going. Flora watched, a little worried, as Maya stumbled over a hidden root.
"Oh no!" cried Maya, tumbling to the ground with a soft thud. A little whimper escaped her lips as her knee scraped against a rough patch of earth. Flora's heart gave a little squeeze. Without thinking, she darted forward.
"Maya, are you okay?" Flora asked, kneeling beside her friend with gentle hands. Her blue eyes were full of concern. Maya had tears in her eyes, but she looked up at Flora, feeling a little bit better just knowing her friend was there.
Flora carefully brushed a few leaves off Maya's scraped knee. "It's just a little boo-boo," she said kindly. "Let's get you up!" She held out her hand, and Maya took it, slowly sitting up. The hurt didn't feel so big anymore with Flora right beside her.
With a small sniffle, Maya stood up. "Thank you, Flora," she whispered, a small smile peeking through her tears. Flora gave her friend a warm hug. It felt good to help, and it felt even better to see Maya smiling again.
The two friends decided to walk a little slower for a while, holding hands as they explored. The sun still shone, the birds still sang, and the forest felt just as magical. But now, it also felt like a place where friends took care of each other, no matter what.
